Microsoft's employee, Jerry Nixon, a developer evangelist said at the company's Ignite conference that "Right now we're releasing Windows 10, and because Windows 10 is the last version of Windows, we're still working on Windows 10." He further explained how Microsoft was launching Windows 8.1 last year, but was developing Windows 10 in the background. While it sounds like Microsoft is pulling the plug on Windows and won't be launching future versions, the truth of the matter is that the company plans to run "Windows as a service".
Recently, the software giant has been in talks about "Windows as a service." How this will play out is still unknown for now, but in future, it'll all come to light. Microsoft has used a new engineering approach in Windows 10, making it a completely modular operating system, that is, system components like the Start Menu and built-in apps are split up into separate parts that can be updated independently. It's a big move, but the company has been working on it to ensure Windows 10 works on all kinds of devices, whether big or small.
Windows 10 is the last version of Windows, in the sense that, the company won't be releasing any Big Bang Windows X update hereafter, where X is a name or a version number.
